NO! ME FIRST!!

Warning!!! This post in no way deals with complaining or complaining about the complainers or bashing or bashing the bashers. Read on at your own risk.

Simple question really. It is only recently that I really started paying attention to the lyrics of Dead songs. As a kid I was just into the jam and flow of songs. Now, especially with the availability of so many crystal clear recordings (GBTA...God Bless The Archive), I have had a chance to really give a listen to what they are actually singing. A couple of lines that really jumped out at me as being particularly potent would be:
"I got no dime, but I got some time to hear his story"
"Fare you well, fare you well, I love you more than words can tell, Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul"
A couple of that hit you?

Thanks SDH for keepin' it real..

My suggestions would be "Mission In The Rain"--whole song.

"Terrapin" for the beauty of it all...

"Sat down for my supper, 'twas a pint on red whiskey", &

"Is there anythng a man don't stand to lose, when a women want's to take it all away, cherish well your thoughts keep a tight grip on your booze, cause drinkin' & thinkin' are all I have today..."

i also love that last Crazy Fingers line...interesting that on 8/13/75 Jer sang "...when i try"

so very, very many...but in the interest of self-moderation i will only chose one that perhaps fares well with the state of the forum on this day

"let the world go by, like clouds a-streaming..."

Another from To Lay Me Down, that I find unspeakably poignant:

"To tell sweet lies one last time, and say goodnight."

Lou,
The thing I like about that one is how it hearkens back to that Grand Ole Opry kind of stuff that Jerry loved so much. Some of the best country songs were about lyin' and cheatin'.

Just gave another listen to the epochal acoustic version on Reckoning, which does indeed have that Grand Ole Opry sound.

Oh, and how could we forget words for the ages like:

"She's got box-back nitties and great big noble thighs, working undercover with a boar hog's eye."

"This space is getting hot", "They loved each other", "Moses can riding in on a Quasar", "can't figure out if it's the end or beginning", and "might as well"
...and I can remember those other lines that Bobby and Jerry kept forgetting.

Cush

I love that this thread was moving fast enough that by the time I typed in my lyrics I found out you beat me to it!

As the slow poke I will take

"Gone are the days we stopped to decide
Where we should go, now we just ride"

I've got to add "fleeing like startled badgers" to my vocabulary, to go with "fall in line like contented sheep". Thanks for that.

I wanted, "What a Long Strange Trip It's Been" to be the caption under my college yearbook photo, but unknown to me until the yearbook came out, it was disallowed.

Needless to say, I was pissed, because no one let me know, in time to change it.

College WAS one long, strange trip.

A couple of years back I saw the local high school had given out souvenier "long, strange senior class trip" t-shirts right before graduation. I couldn't decide whether I should be amused or irritated.

The one that stuck in my head like glue after my first ahow was "If the thunder don't get ya', then the lightnin' will!"

Did I just say "ahow"? Man, what an a-hole.

I'm partial to this one of late:

If a man among you
Got no sin upon his hand
Let him cast a stone and keep on
Playin' in the band

Ten years ago I walked this street, my dreams were riding tall
Tonight I would be thankful Lord, for any dreams at all
Some folks would be happy just to have one dream come true
But everything you gather is just more that you can lose
